Sprint paddling has been an Olympic sport since the summer Olympics in 1936. Men and Women compete in two different disciplines; canoe and kayak. In each disciple athletes race in single, double and quadruple events, known as K1, K2 and K4 for kayak and C1, C2, and C4 for canoe. Races distances vary from 200m, 500m, 1000m and 6km events.
Historically, Canada has always been very strong in international competition. On a regular basis Canada has athletes win and podium at the Olympics and World Championships.
Sprint paddling is unique in incorporating aspects of both individual and team sports. This helps develop personal growth and valuable teamwork skills. It is a great opportunity to spend time exercising outside appreciating nature. From a young age the sport develops balance, coordination and other important motor skills that help promote a lifelong active lifestyle!
